As promised, I did see Resident Evil: Extinction on Friday night and it was a great evening on two fronts.
Not only did it give me the opportunity to support Spencer, but it also had a whole other meaning in relation to the movie My First Kiss. Turns out that September 22, 2005 was the very day I first met Peter Paul Basler, who is now my co-producer on My First Kiss. A week or so ago, we were talking about how long he’d been in L.A. and realized it was closing in on two years since we first met.
I believe I wrote about that in an earlier post, but as a refresher, I met Peter from an ad he placed on Craigslist when he first came to Los Angeles. No, not that kind of ad. He put an ad in the film section wanting to meet other people in the industry. Now, I’m not one to answer that type of ad, nor to I troll craigslist looking for much of anything. But for some reason I’d been on there and happened to read his ad. And there was something about it that called out to me…”You should meet this person.” Something in his down-to-earth approach and that fact that he had identified who he was and even gave his IMDB link.
After a couple of emails, we arranged to meet at the Starbucks near Laurel Canyon. It was extremely crowded that day so we ended up at the pizza joint around the corner and the rest is history. We’ve been helping each other out in one way or another ever since. So, after talking about our impending anniversary, I suggested we do lunch back at the pizza joint. He agreed, but when I looked it up and realized it was this past weekend, I offered up the idea of going to see Spencer’s movie together since we had both had the pleasure of working with her on the staged reading of My First Kiss.
We headed to the AMC 16 in Burbank and caught the 7:20 showing of the movie. Neither of us had seen one or two but we were excited to see the third in the franchise. I enjoyed the movie – thought it had a lot of great shots – seeing Vegas buried in sand was cool and I thought the bird sequences were very well done. But I especially loved watching Spencer’s scenes. I especially liked her scenes with Milla Jovovich.
Which reminds me…I have a little 6º of separation trivia for you. Spencer Locke was in Resident Evil with Milla Jovovich who was once married to her Dazed and Confused co-star Shawn Andrews who played opposite Spencer Locke in the staged reading of My First Kiss. Or is that 1º of separation.
And lastly, congrats Spencer on having the #1 movie at the box office. Oh, and Happy Sweet 16!
