Back On It

January 24, 2008 by cheshercat

Early last week Peter and I had an excellent meeting with our director for My First Kiss.  We had spent a couple of hours the day before hammering out the agenda – everything we wanted to discuss and in what order.  Being creative types, it is often hard to stay on task without going on creative tangents and never getting to what really needs to be nailed down.

We went through what we needed to do to finish the movie proposal that we will use to pitch potential financiers and investors.  The director is going to put together a visual presentation that will reflect the look and tone of the movie.  Peter and I are working on the nuts and bolts of the proposal and I am also doing a rewrite on the script. We talked a little about the script and I was really thrilled that the director is really invested in the characters and the story. She has really great ideas on the look of the movie and also on some of the people she wants to bring on board.  If she gets any one of the three or four DPs she mentioned you will find me doing cartwheels down Sunset Blvd naked.

But this meeting was not about the script – we agreed that she and I would do a story meeting later.  So, yesterday, Peter, Julie (an awesome development expert who has been helping us out lately) and I sat down and went through our own individual script notes.  It was GREAT!  Everyone’s notes were relevant and useful, not to mention totally inspiring, so I am now chomping at the bit to start the rewrite.

I immediately emailed the director to relay my enthusiasm.  She just wrote back and said she finished one read through and now is reading it again and making her notes.  So we will be getting together early next to go over hers and our notes.

This is very exciting!

How the Time Flies

December 31, 2007 by cheshercat

My last post here was in September. I should be flogged by the Blog Gods. I wonder if I even have one reader left. I would expect by now that everyone has abandoned ship.

Forgive me.

But I am here today to throw one more 2007 post out into the blogoshpere. This is it. The end of another year. How does that happen? They just keep ticking by with no thought about slowing down, giving us just a little more time to get things done. Please, Mr. Time, I need so much more of you. Stop making me chase you down. Just stop for a year or two and let me catch up. Is that too much to ask?

Hello?

Are you listening?

Hah! All I’m getting back is “tick, tick, tick, tick, tick…” speeding by faster than ever.

Fine. Be that way. See if I care.

I’ll find a way to beat you.

Eventually.

In the meantime, I’ll say thanks for all the time I’ve had so far and all the future time I’m given.

It’s much appreciated.

And I wish everyone in the world a very Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!

At The Movies

September 24, 2007 by cheshercat

As promised, I did see Resident Evil: Extinction on Friday night and it was a great evening on two fronts.

Not only did it give me the opportunity to support Spencer, but it also had a whole other meaning in relation to the movie My First Kiss. Turns out that September 22, 2005 was the very day I first met Peter Paul Basler, who is now my co-producer on My First Kiss. A week or so ago, we were talking about how long he’d been in L.A. and realized it was closing in on two years since we first met.

I believe I wrote about that in an earlier post, but as a refresher, I met Peter from an ad he placed on Craigslist when he first came to Los Angeles. No, not that kind of ad. He put an ad in the film section wanting to meet other people in the industry. Now, I’m not one to answer that type of ad, nor to I troll craigslist looking for much of anything. But for some reason I’d been on there and happened to read his ad. And there was something about it that called out to me…”You should meet this person.” Something in his down-to-earth approach and that fact that he had identified who he was and even gave his IMDB link.

After a couple of emails, we arranged to meet at the Starbucks near Laurel Canyon. It was extremely crowded that day so we ended up at the pizza joint around the corner and the rest is history. We’ve been helping each other out in one way or another ever since. So, after talking about our impending anniversary, I suggested we do lunch back at the pizza joint. He agreed, but when I looked it up and realized it was this past weekend, I offered up the idea of going to see Spencer’s movie together since we had both had the pleasure of working with her on the staged reading of My First Kiss.

We headed to the AMC 16 in Burbank and caught the 7:20 showing of the movie. Neither of us had seen one or two but we were excited to see the third in the franchise. I enjoyed the movie – thought it had a lot of great shots – seeing Vegas buried in sand was cool and I thought the bird sequences were very well done. But I especially loved watching Spencer’s scenes. I especially liked her scenes with Milla Jovovich.

Which reminds me…I have a little 6º of separation trivia for you. Spencer Locke was in Resident Evil with Milla Jovovich who was once married to her Dazed and Confused co-star Shawn Andrews who played opposite Spencer Locke in the staged reading of My First Kiss. Or is that 1º of separation.

And lastly, congrats Spencer on having the #1 movie at the box office. Oh, and Happy Sweet 16!

Resident Evil: Extinction

Run, don’t walk… to see one of my favorite young actresses in her latest movie, Resident Evil: Extinction.

Of course, I’m talking about the very talented , who played Jenny in the staged reading of my script, My First Kiss.

Spencer is a brilliant young actress and a beautiful down-to-earth person. I absolutely adore her and can’t wait to see her tomorrow on the silver screen.

The movie opens on over 2800 screens. GO SEE IT.

On The Radio

September 9, 2007 by cheshercat

In case there is anyone still reading this seemingly long-forgotten blog (it’s not really – I think about it every day) I thought I’d let you know I’m being interviewed this Tuesday night/Wednesday morning (Sept. 11/12) on CJAD talk radio out of Montreal.

The good news is you can pick it up from anywhere in the world (providing you have an internet connection) at the station’s website. I’ll be on the Holder Tonight show at 10:30PM PST (a very late 1:30AM EST) talking about my new book that is coming out on November 1st.

So, if you’re up and have nothing to do, I hope you’ll tune in.

More blogging about the movie to come…very soon.

As my book deadline nears…

June 20, 2007 by cheshercat

…I’m not completing ignoring My First Kiss.

I ran into our illustrious director yesterday and she imparted some potentially positive news, proving that even though she’s crazy business with her other creative endeavors, the movie remains forefront in her mind.

Mine too.

I followed up the news with an hour long phone meeting with Peter to get the lowdown on what he’s been up to. Erin, who was working on our budget before she got called off on location, is back. They had a meeting to bring her up to speed and she is now revising the rough budget. He has also been working closely with our friends in Montana and we should be receiving a selection of location photos specific to our needs within the next two weeks.

Peter and I also discussed stategy. We will be moving full steam ahead once my book goes to China for printing the beginning of July. I will then be working on the movie at least half the time, with the remainder on marketing the book.

Feeling very positive these days.

I’m Not Dead…

…just really busy trying to finish my book.

Stuff is going on with My First Kiss. It’s just being done behind my back. But I’ll be back on it soon. You’ll see.

Imagine

Peter did a more specific location breakdown on the script and sent requests for additional photos to the film commissions. We will use them as part of our visual presentation to raise money.

Today I got a email from Nevada with new pictures in line with his request.

I love looking at location shots. I could see the characters in the different places, playing out the scenes.

Working with a Director

April 27, 2007 by cheshercat

Two weeks ago I had my first sit down with our esteemed director. I’d tell you something about her, including her name, but I’ve neglected to get permission to out her on the blog.

Anyway, two weeks ago today I went over to her house for our first story meeting. I was really tired that day because the tooth problem I thought I had remedied with my herbs came screaming back in the middle of the night, leaving me sleepless. And I had a meeting early that morning on the other side of the hill with a digital company to discuss doing the scans for my upcoming book. A company that my director had recommended.

I got to her house around one and we talked for close to five hours. Five hours without discussing any specific notes on the script. We talked about movies we liked and how she thought our movie should look, compared to some of the other movies we both liked. And we talked about story. Mostly in broad strokes. But also some of the subtleties. We talked about the girls (the lead characters)…their behavior, their relationship to each other and themselves. And feel. A lot about the feel of the story. Did I mention I was really tired that day and still had a toothache?

By the time we were finished, I wasn’t sure if we had accomplished anything at all. I didn’t take notes during our meeting, nor after (something I generally do because it takes about two nanoseconds to forget everything that’s said). As I was leaving, I had to ask, “Did we get anything done?”

Since that meeting, I’ve been slammed with other things. My book and it’s looming deadline. Setting up my store at www.cheshercat.com (hint, hint…go check it out…see me on the Merv Griffin show sitting next to Jay Leno…and buy something) and taking on a bunch of movie poster designs for Cannes. Basically doing nothing on My First Kiss.

Until last night. That’s when we had meeting #2. It was a production meeting. This time at my house with the director, Peter and me. Our budget girl is out of the picture for the time being as she’s working on a movie shooting in at the Grand Canyon. It was the first sit down that Peter had with the director. Our main purpose was to make decisions on what we want in our presentation package. The package that will help up raise the 5M plus we need to get this baby on the silver screen.

We started at 8:30pm. We talked a lot about the feel of the movie and what visual style the director had in mind. We referred to movies we liked and disliked as far as their visual style. We talked about how to address the look in relationship to the period. And as we were talking, I was suddenly able to cite meaningful portions of our discussion two weeks ago. I guess we did get something done. I like working this way. It’s very conducive to creativity.

We also talked about the visuals we want to put in the package. I’m so happy that our director is a visual ace. By the time we were done at around 1am (only because we were all nodding off) we had divied up the work we need to get done for the next step. Unfortunately for Peter, most of it landed on his plate. He’s going to do more work on the budget and break down the script into locations. Once the breakdown is done, he’ll get more specific shots from the film commissions and we’ll make decisions on where we want to shoot.

I’m going to get in touch with some of the Canadian producers we met in Canada and the director is going to read the script a bunch more times to further decide what visual she wants to shoot for the package.

Poor Peter.
